St Melangell (or Monacella) is the Patron Saint of hares. She was an Irish princess who fled to Wales to avoid marriage, and lived as a hermit. One day as she was foraging, a frightened hare ran and hid in her cloak. It was being hunted by the prince of Powys, and he urged his hounds on. The hounds recoiled and would not approach her, and the hare was saved. The prince was enchanted by her, and bestowed the land to her. Hares were no longer hunted there, and became known as “Melangell’s lambs”. She was beatified and Penant Melangell is still a place of pilgrimage today. This was very tricky to carve. I decided, after a lot of work, that I didn’t like her face. So I cut her head out and started again! It is a limited edition of 25. The artist’s proof prints were printed onto Nepalese Lokta, with the edition being printed onto Awagama Masa paper. The print is mounted to fit into a standard 50cm x 70cm frame. Available mounted only, or framed in a black frame.
